Vaginal Yeast Infection

 
Vaginal yeast infection: Infection of the vagina caused by a fungus known as Candida. A yeast vaginal infection is characterized by itching, burning, soreness, pain during intercourse and/or urination, and vaginal discharge that is typically cheesy white in color. The diagnosis is confirmed through identification of the yeast under a microscope from a specimen scraped from the vaginal area. A yeast vaginal infection that is causing symptoms is treated with topical medications applied in and around the vagina and with medications taken by mouth. Topical antibiotic creams include butoconazole (Femstat 3), clotrimazole (Lotrimin), miconazole (Monistat), and terconazole (Terazol 3). Clotrimazole, miconazole, terconazole, and nystatin (Mycostatin) are also available as vaginal tablets. Oral antibiotics for yeast vaginitis include fluconazole (Diflucan). During pregnancy, only the topical creams are used.
