What is the most important information I should know about Panafil?

· Avoid getting Panafil in the eyes. If this occurs, rinse the eyes thoroughly with water.

· Do not use other topical preparations on the affected area unless directed to do so by your doctor.

What is Panafil?

· Papain is a substance from the papaya fruit. Papain breaks down certain proteins.

· Urea also breaks down protein.

· Panafil is used to debride (remove or breakdown) dead tissue in wounds such as bed sores, ulcers, burns, surgical wounds, cysts, carbuncles, and others.

· Panafil may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before using Panafil?

· Before using Panafil, talk to your doctor if you have other medical conditions or allergies. You may not be able to use Panafil, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment.

· It is not known whether papain-urea will be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not use Panafil without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.

· It is not known whether papain-urea passes into breast milk. Do not use Panafil without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

How should I use Panafil?

· Use Panafil exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.

· Wash your hands before and after applying the medication.

· Clean the wound as directed. Apply the medication directly to the wound. Cover with an appropriate dressing as directed by your healthcare provider.

· Reapply the medication and change the dressing as directed.

· It is important to use papain-urea regularly and for the full amount of time prescribed to get the most benefit.

· Store Panafil at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

What happens if I miss a dose?

· Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember.

What happens if I overdose?

· Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose of papain-urea is suspected or if the medication has been ingested.

· Symptoms of an overdose of Panafil are not known.

What should I avoid while using Panafil?

· Avoid getting Panafil in the eyes. If this occurs, rinse the eyes thoroughly with water.

· Do not use other topical preparations on the affected area unless directed to do so by your doctor.

What are the possible side effects of Panafil?

· If you experience a rare but serious allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; or hives), stop using Panafil and seek emergency medical attention.

· Other less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to use Panafil and talk to your doctor if you experience irritation or slight burning of the affected area.

· Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

What other drugs will affect Panafil?

· Do not use other topical preparations on the affected area unless directed to do so by your doctor.

· Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Panafil. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking or using any prescription or over the counter medicines, including vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.
