What is the most important information I should know about Ziox?

· Avoid getting Ziox in the eyes. If this occurs, rinse the eyes thoroughly with water.

· Do not use other topical preparations on the affected area unless directed to do so by your doctor.

 

What is Ziox?

· Papain is a substance from the papaya fruit. Papain breaks down certain proteins.

· Urea also breaks down protein.

· Ziox is used to debride (remove or breakdown) dead tissue in wounds such as bed sores, ulcers, burns, surgical wounds, cysts, carbuncles, and others.

· Ziox may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

 

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before using Ziox?

· Before using Ziox, talk to your doctor if you have other medical conditions or allergies. You may not be able to use Ziox, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment.

· It is not known whether papain-urea will be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not use Ziox without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.

· It is not known whether papain-urea passes into breast milk. Do not use Ziox without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

 

How should I use Ziox?

· Use Ziox exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.

· Wash your hands before and after applying the medication.

· Clean the wound as directed. Apply the medication directly to the wound. Cover with an appropriate dressing as directed by your healthcare provider.

· Reapply the medication and change the dressing as directed.

· It is important to use papain-urea regularly and for the full amount of time prescribed to get the most benefit.

· Store Ziox at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

 

What happens if I miss a dose?

· Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember.

 

What happens if I overdose?

· Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose of papain-urea is suspected or if the medication has been ingested.

· Symptoms of an overdose of Ziox are not known.

 

What should I avoid while using Ziox?

· Avoid getting Ziox in the eyes. If this occurs, rinse the eyes thoroughly with water.

· Do not use other topical preparations on the affected area unless directed to do so by your doctor.

 

What are the possible side effects of Ziox?

· If you experience a rare but serious allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; or hives), stop using Ziox and seek emergency medical attention.

· Other less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to use Ziox and talk to your doctor if you experience irritation or slight burning of the affected area.

· Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
