Teaching Compassion
If the baby is taught early on by the mother how to care for others, he will carry this gift throughout his adolescent and adult life. The mother may ask, can I really teach the baby the qualities of empathy and compassion as an infant? The answer is yes. The following are some tips that will help the mother to teach the baby about sensitivity and caring for others. the mother should:
· Respond to the baby's crying with loving attention in keeping with his unique personality and temperament.
· Realize that the baby will learn life skills through playing. · Tell the baby that the experiences of other people are similar to him. · Provide a role model showing caring behavior. · Promote the baby to think about how other people are feeling. · Aid the baby to be aware of other people in his everyday life. · Tell the baby that it is good to do something suitable to end an unfair situation. · Use courtesy and kindness to correct the baby's mistakes. · Use empathy and kindness in responding to the baby's emotions. · Deter the baby from making judgments about people based on their exterior appearance. · Expose the baby to the cultural diversity within society. · Tell the baby about issues going on in the world today. Ultimately, when the baby receives he will learn how to give. He will not become compassionate if every time he cries as an infant he is left alone in a dark room. Through the mother's compassion towards the baby as an infant, the baby will gain the skills to care and feel for others in turn.
