Building Self Confidence

As with many behaviors, the beginnings of self confidence are rooted in infancy. When the baby's needs are consistently and properly met, he feels that he is worthy of attention. Responsiveness is the key to the development a healthy infant self-esteem. If the baby's needs are not consistently met, he will learn to doubt his own cues and distrust himself. He will probably become confused and feel that his signals have no meaning. If not nurtured, as the baby grows he will have trouble asking for what he needs and will not feel in control of his life and his destiny.

The baby will strongly value the messages he receives from the mother. The mother should try to reflect positive images to the baby by giving him the idea that she values him, that his opinions matter and that his behavior is pleasing to the mother. Praise and compliments are two ways the mother can help the baby develop a positive image of himself.
