What to WearFor most women, maternity clothing does not become a concern until the second trimester. Weight gain during the first trimester is minimal and not likely to be enough to require larger clothing. When weight gain does get to the point that the mother's old clothes do not fit, comfort should be her first concern when searching for maternity clothing. Beyond the mother's size and comfort, she should be concerned with the fabric and foot wear. Because of the increased circulation many women feel much warmer during pregnancy. Thus, breathable clothing made of natural fibers is ideal. As well, because feet and legs tend to swell when weight gain becomes prominent, comfortable shoes and hosiery need to be carefully selected to ensure that they will remain comfortable. Many women are wrong when they believe that maternity requires a completely new wardrobe. There are only a number of bare essentials that need to be purchased. Specially designed maternity clothing can be relatively expensive. Costs can be cut by buying men's clothing, plus size women's wear, ethnic dresses, and drawstring pants. Underwear is very important while pregnant. Because the mother's breasts are likely to gain so much weight she must have a very supportive bra. Poorly supported breasts have a high probability of sagging after pregnancy. When buying maternity bras it is advisable to have them fitted by trained staff to ensure a proper fit. Typically, wider shoulder straps and larger under-cup bands are recommended. The mother should also try to buy a tighter bra to wear at night. This will give her breasts extra support. Again, because the mother's feet and legs swell during pregnancy, she will want to ensure that her socks are loose and highly elastic. Socks that are too tight or do not have enough give are likely to cut into the mother's skin. Cotton socks are recommended as well because they are better at allowing moisture to escape. Knee socks should be avoided because they have a tendency to be restrictive, promoting varicose veins. Shoes are also an issue; because the mother's balance is reduced as she gains weight and her feet swell, it is best to have a loose fitting, flat shoe that offers good support. Cross trainers are likely the mother's best choice for casual wear.
