The Role of Family in PregnancyPregnancy and parenthood will bring with them many changes to the mother's life. The relationships shared with family members and friends, and the roles that each play in her life are no exception. Redefining relationships and roles is an integral part of pregnancy. The mother's partner will begin to play a greater role as her condition becomes more restricting and demanding. If the mother has other children, they too will have to change especially if they are at present an only child. There is much work required in preparing children to share their home and the attention of their parents with another child. The mother will also find that her relationship with her parents and in-laws is changing. She may also realize that her relationships with friends, especially those without children or a partner, change dramatically as well. These changing roles and relationships can be difficult to deal with especially for an expectant mother. However, knowing what to expect and how to handle the situation can make it much easier. This section is devoted to educating expectant mothers, their families, and their friends on their respective roles during pregnancy and how their relationships may be altered. Particular attention will be paid to the changing role of the partner, and the evolving relationship between the expectant parents. Much focus will also be placed on how to prepare siblings for the arrival of a newborn. It will become evident rather quickly that the mother and her family's greatest asset in dealing with these changing roles and responsibilities is communication. The mother should speak openly and honestly with her family, and encourage them to do the same. This pregnancy can be used to improve family communication skills which can be used to promote coping and independence after the pregnancy.
