Diabetes during Pregnancy

Pregnancy can exacerbate the health problems of women already suffering from diabetes, or it can trigger diabetes in women who have a predisposition to the disease. During the course of their pregnancy, these women may develop symptoms of diabetes, including weakness, increased thirst and urination.

If diabetes is not properly controlled in a pregnant woman, then she is at a higher risk of preeclampsia and eclampsia, as well as infection, shoulder dystocia, polyhydramnios and an increased incidence of congenital birth defects.

Ultimately, a woman with well controlled blood-glucose levels and insulin therapy should not experience a pregnancy significantly different from those of healthy women.
